Past Life Romeo ‘Saliva’

Past Life Romeo is the solo project of Camila Djadja, singer-songwriter, formerly of the rock group Sugar Pills. Camila is also known for their work with film and cinema, having produced several music videos as well as original soundtracks.Past Life Romeo is a brand-new alternative pop project, mixing electro, hyperpop and rock. There’s melancholy and a sensuality in the writing and voice of Camila, mixed with the eclectic productions of musician Carlos Loverboy (Spill Tab, Blossoms, Myd…) who co-produced Past Life Romeo’s first EP, and the garage drums of Jim Casanova (Annie Ada…).This first Past Life Romeo EP, scheduled for release on 24th May, titled ‘You Look Just Like Me’, was written two years ago, when Camila was going through major changes in their life. It evokes intimate and introspective questions about change, self-image, gender and sexuality. It’s a very bold hybridization of multiple genres and influences like Lorde’s pop, Charli XCX and Sophie’s productions, early M83’s, soft rock and UK garage. The EP was fully auto-produced by Camila through their record label Secret Life Records, as the
first milestone of their brand new project. It was mixed by James Rand (Eartheater, Sega Bodega).

‘Saliva’ is the focus track and the most pop song on the EP. It’s a break-up song, about navigating the post-breakup feelings, trying to rebuild a life on your own and missing the other person. The idea behind that track was to write a classic break-up song, but from a clear queer perspective (the chorus is very evocative : “she don’t call no more”). The song was built around the guitar riff, giving it an indie rock vibe, mixed with the electronic production that can be found throughout the EP, reminiscent of artists like Holly Humberstone or The Japanese House.

Louiza Aura, lead actress in the ‘Saliva’ video with Camila, also stars in Alexis Langlois’ “Les Reines du drame”, the most talked-about film at Cannes right now. She’s also one of Trois Couleurs’ ’25 under 25′. A past love story comes to life through memory in the video, set in
a fragmented natural setting. A reminiscence that emerges from an imaginary world inspired by video games and returns again and again to a magical nature.
On the live side, Past Life Romeo have headlined Inrocks Super Club and recently appeared in a co-set with Felicita (PC Music) at ICI Festival with more appearances planned for this year.
