Katie Laffan ‘Tastemaker’

What a breath of fresh air this is from new Irish sensation Katie Laffan. Infectiously funky and smooth yet lo-fi and deliciously loose. On the surface, this sounds like Nina Persson and The Cardigans style pop-funk but a deeper look at Laffan reveals a hip hop / spoken word type of vocal delivery in places and a punk ethos and spirit (funk punk!). Laffan’s voice is emotive in an interesting natural way which is gripping and distinctive and the great thing about this track is the laid back production with instruments being left dry and uncompressed in places, feeling like an authentic bedroom band performance.
